So You're Feeling Overwhelmed
I am fiercely and powerfully overwhelmed by life right now.
Everything seems to be sitting on me and it is getting to be rather draining. So instead of complaining about it, I am going to make a list of ways that I try and relieve some of that pressure.
1. Praying and Reading the Bible
This one is a little more specific to me and my spiritual background. In the past, I have found most of the times I have been at true peace and calm, have been the times I am my closest to the Lord and my spirituality. Lately, I've drifted away and I really want to to use this year to get back to that place of peace and understanding.
2. Write
I have never considered myself a writer. Writing is a release for me. When my thoughts get too bottled up, my feelings have gotten a little too hard to handle and I'm not comfortable sharing it with the world around me; I write. I have notebooks for days with random stories, that are partly fiction wrapped up in my hopes and dreams. Stolen moments in time where I pour my whole heart onto a sheet of paper and then let it be.
3. Making a List
Yeah, this list making thing is where it is at. Bucket lists, to do lists, book lists, playlists. If I can organize a list about it, I will do it. The order that list making brings is soothing. You can even order it based on importance.
4. Really Long Hot Showers/Baths
You know the ones I'm talking about. The best showers are the ones where the water is pelting away against your skin and you can see the steam rising out of the shower. Or you're sitting in hot water covered in suds and the bath bomb has spread all throughout the tub. You've dimmed the lights in the bathroom, your favorite candle has been burning for a while now. The door is closed and you have on the perfect ambient sounds to help soothe your racing mind. And you spend the entire time in the water taking deep, cleansing breaths.
Yeah, that's the kind of soul-soothing peace I'm trying to reach.
5. Physical Self-Care
Ask any of my closest friends and they will tell you my favorite way to treat myself is to take care of my body and my skin. I love the feeling of freshly shaved, moisturized legs. I live for the feeling of a deep cleansing facial. I like that moment when you pluck or pop something and you feel it pop out. I love smooth, moisturized skin. That right there is a spectacular moment. Let me tell you, I have gone from pure exhaustion to energized after a late night shower that involves a full shave, deep face cleansing and then moisturizing myself from head to toe. And the best way to cap it all off is sliding into your favorite jammies (silk sets and silk nightgowns for this bougie gal) and sliding into warm fresh sheets. A shudder of pure comfort just runs through me thinking about this.
6. Watching a Movie
Movies are a great way to pass the time. But when you feel as if the world is working against you, that's the time to draw for an old favorite. For me, it is a Bollywood film named Aiyyaa. It has all the elements of a film that I love: musical numbers, romance, an lead actress I love, a fine male lead, lots of laughs, a romance that makes you swoon and cringe and a properly happy ending. I really don't ask for a lot. Especially when I need to get my peace back to equilibrium.
7. Listen to Something
A podcast, ambient nature sounds, an album that I love, my favorite artists, heck even one of my favorite songs on repeat. Anything to drown out the noise. Sometimes I do this in the dark, sometimes I go for a drive. Maybe I'll clean or I might read something. The only constant is sound. I find a good soundscape is a great way to soothe a hectic mind.
8. Getting ALL the Way Dolled Up
I love the getting ready process. Just like I love stripping it all off at the end of the night, I love putting myself together. The process of finding that outfit that'll make me feel just the right amount of beautiful, sultry and slightly decadent. Laying out my makeup to coordinate with the colors in my outfit. Applying each layer with precision and calmness. Doing my hair in the best style to go with the makeup and the outfit. Getting the right shoes for the evening: am I dropping it low? just hanging out? will I be walking? Do I get to wear heels, or I am wearing something flat? Whatever the outcome I know I tried and I know I will look my best.
What are some of the ways you try to relieve the stress? Comment on this post and let me know.
